By 1942 all male British subjects between 18 and 51 years old, and all females 20 to 30 years old, resident in Britain, were liable to be called up.
Between December 1943 and March 1948, ten percent of all male conscripts aged between 18 and 25 were chosen by lot to work in the coal mines – the so–called 'Bevin Boys'.
